I hope Kuntz’s book has a superb editor. I don’t know if he doesn’t try too hard when he posts on the forums and suchlike, but he comes across as more “rambling drunk with inexplicable career” than “expert in any field except the one he passed out in on the way back from the taverna last night”. I’ve been trying and failing to parse his gibberish on Ruins of Murkhill for what feels like half an age and failing.
I am perturbed by the current fashion for disconnected meanderings, with a few anchor statements so your readers/listeners can fill in the blanks with their own prejudice. It’s good rhetoric but appalling if you actually want to find things out or understand them.
I reread that blurb when I was feeling a little more awake. Ye GODS. Who *edits* this bilge? Who sits down and decides that this logorrheic hairsplitting will make a case for buying the wretched thing? Who let that fucking awful final sentence through? This isn’t blurb, this is a review, and a shabby-assed MA student’s desperate-to-get-his-first-citation review at that.

On a more serious note: I got Vornheim a while back. Never used it, but it’s a urban fantasy setting (sparsely described but riddled with random tables, including the questionably useful drop-die type) with China Miéville-accented regular D&D denizens. May be fun but for a certain sort of gaming, my D&D usually runs more towards Howard and Leiber than Miéville, which probably places me firmly with the grogs, except I can’t stand the cry for orthodoxy in elfgaming. (I haven’t got R&PL or MotBM so I won’t comment on those.)
James Raggi seems to be mostly into “fuck you” modules, Tomb of Horrors style, but there’s some decent stuff under the LotFP imprint. Qelong is a good metal-as-fuck mini-sandbox with dwarf mercenaries riding undead rocs, and magical nukes poisoning the land, and a few splashes of South Asian myth, making good on the “Fantasy Fucking Vietnam” trope. (Ken Hite’s stuff is stellar, usually, regardless of imprint.) And The Towers Two, the ill-fated Dave Brockie (RIP Oderus Urungus) manuscript finished by Jobe Bittman, features predictably GWAR-ish physical humor but an entertaining enough plot device for a few evenings of beer-and-pretzels D&D. (Is there even any other sort of D&D?)
Broodmother Skyfortress is a bitchin’ high-level adventure, BTW. Too bad nearly half the page count is padded with excerpts from the author’s blog (admittedly a great read, but I’ve already read most of it, so fuck you Raggi for pulling a Kevin Siembieda and padding a book with old material).
So, if it comes down to grogs vs. edgelords, there seems to be no shortage of insufferable, unrepentant, self-absorbed manchildren on either side of the fence, but I get the impression that at least the edgelords have picked up the old toys and came up with new ways to play with them — given a creative liberty Satanic Panic corporate TSR could never match — but what have the grogs ever done that’s worth picking up and playing with? Mind you, I’m a pretty straight-laced D&D guy, my games have taverns and castles and peasants and kings and shit. I don’t usually do what passes for “gonzo” today except in small increments.
But I’m hard pressed to pinpoint anything from the grog brigade that ever got my gaming juices flowing, even though my games probably have more in common with the K&KA crowd than whatever the Attak is playing these days.

There was a small group of peers around which the OSR grew and they were looking to share information and to enjoy discussion for its own sake without any notion of selling their ideas. AD&Ders tend to create their own material and by ‘AD&Der’ I can only barely include anyone who used TSR modules. The ‘Edgelords’ as you call them know nothing about A/OD&D and rely on risible marketplace clone or deviant rules – they have no knowledge so they focus on creativity exclusively deriving inspiration from one dimensional, one note, one trick random tables. The language used in ‘Edgelord’ rpg material is laughably predictable because of random-table-brain and could be generated with a scripting language.
Most of the original peer group has vanished and the most interesting of those were not ‘household’ names. The surly cretins at the K&KA with the exception of grodog and philotomy are not at all representative of the original peer group .

Besides, it’s not like TSR D&D is quantum physics or cancer surgery. A little exegesis goes a long way, and no amount of Internet advice substitutes hands-on experience.

But you raised the question of what have the old grogs done – a fair question. So here goes a few, incomplete thoughts.
Love it or hate it, Carcosa has an original vision. A planet abandoned millions of years ago by the serpent men with their human experiments left amid the ruins is a cool concept. Faggi picked it up, but it still falls under the old school aesthetic than the edgelord. He loved it because of the child rape and sacrifice stuff, but strip away that sad bullshit and it is pretty rad, moreso than any edgelord sandbox.
Anomalous Subsurface Environment is a cool dungeon, full of weirdnss but it makes sense (unlike edgelord stuff).
Spire of Iron and Crystal by Matt Finch was a solid adventure, again a little gonzo and reminiscent of Expedition to the barrier peaks, but a fun romp.
Robert Conley is a subliterate idiot but his free sandbox Blackmarsh is pretty cool, not necessarily on its own merits but as a guide for old school seat of the pants adventure locations without having to detail the color of the princess’ eyes (sorry, Lexi, it really is not important). It is light and inspirational, and while I disagree with Conloid about the blOwSR, he certainly puts his money where his mouth is and this was his finest moment.
There were several mags like Fight On! and Knockspell that were hit or miss in content, but showed a lot of creativity and love for the game. There was useable content in about every issue.
There was some more stuff out there – indeed there was a glut of product – but I think these examples are some of the better things. Maybe I’ll remeber more later.
So while we mercilessly savaged the blOwSR, I see the score as Edglords 2, Grogs 6.
Thanks for the thoughtful response, Tim. I own ASE and Blackmarsh and they are indeed excellent products. And you’ve piqued my curiosity with regards to Carcosa and Spire of Iron & Crystal.
Rob Conley is a RPGsite regular and I have found him to be generally an agreeable human being (admittedly an increasingly lower bar to clear over at the ‘Shite), and I am fond of his exhaustive and free sandbox-building guides for “fantasy” (mostly D&D) and “SF” (mostly Traveller). A devout grog he may be, but he clearly lacks the fundamentalism of the more irksome characters that haunt K&KA. I do genuinely enjoy his writing, misspelled as it may be.
No problem, amigo. I am in the camp that dislikes Carcosa, but it is a unique creation. And I give Conley hell, but he is a good dude. While he is in love with his own pontifications, you are right he lacks that fundamentalist streak.
I’ve tried a couple times to like ASE, but I just can’t do it. Wading through the sucky setting and seemingly endless random tables of minutiae turned me off by the time I finally got to the dungeon, which I might have liked if it was presented on its own. Maybe ASE2 was better, I assume that’s just dungeon?
The setting is standard and the tables were hit or miss. That was right before the time you needed a random table to determine the sucess of applying mustard to your sandwich, so I didn’t mind it as much as I would have a little later. The dungeon was the cool part. I never got ASE2, but I should.
Best writer of prose published so far? For me that’s the intelligence metric in rpgs.
ASE is the best of the ‘gonzo’ releases- I like the whole ‘orbital gods’ bit, it hearkens back to the AI gods in Gene Wolfe’s Book of the Long Sun. I also dig the ‘Thundarr’ vibe, with mutant techno-wizards ruling over small city-states.
Once in the dungeon, the orcs on the first level reskinned as ‘batboy’ expies was an inspired touch, as is the ‘demihumans as grey-alien hybrids’ trope. Best of all, none of it is overpowered Arduin/Booty and the Beasts killer-DM nonsense.
YDIS: ASE2 is indeed better. It’s silly but not cloyingly so (or maybe just better aimed at my set of cultural references, e.g. The Tomb of Metal). BACLF just gave it a good run-down.
Kent: Thanks for clarifying your points. I generally agree that there may be more game-table-useful insight to be gleaned from grog exegesis than from the edgelord business model. And to be honest, I think the gaming transpiring at my game table has more in common with the grogs’ games than with the edgelords’.
Still, trawling blogs and forums for nuggets of wisdom will only take one so far. Which is why it would be nice to see more interesting grog content out there.
Nowadays I’ve been looking a lot at the Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG third-party scene. I’m not particularly crazy about either the game (which I have yet to run, but strikes me as trying too hard to be gonzo and zany) or the official adventures (some of which have good ideas but generally feel so very brief, humdrum, anemic even). But settings like Hubris and the recently crowdfunded (and very ASE-like) Umerican Survival Guide strike me as better than anything I recall reading from Goodman Games.
As for AD&D1 vs. BECMI/RC, at the risk of sparking an edition war, I am partial to the latter because AD&D1 was designed as a tournament play system, i.e. it assumes that PCs will engage the exact same sorts of adventures across the level spectrum — sure, it pays lip service to the “stronghold and followers” at 9th level but offers absolutely no framework for your PC to get off his ass and put these perks to good use. You _can_ improvise rulings for that, but most of the grog brigade seems eerily silent on the matter; same with the TSR modules. Leaving me with the impression that AD&D1 PCs are supposed to remain murderhobos well into the 20th level cap.
BECMI/RC gives you tools for actually building, staffing, running and defending the damn stronghold and its surrounding lands. It assumes that, while you may leave the safety of your citadel at any time to put down a particularly powerful threat, the game has fundamentally changed, and your PC has become a mover and shaker within the game world. As a kid I thought it nicely mirrored Conan’s own ascent from tomb-robber to storied mercenary captain to usurper king. And it became a big part of my own take on D&D.
AD&D1 is a fun game, as is D&D5. I’ll gladly play either. But BECMI/RC (and its chief OSR revision, ACKS) hews closer to my Platonic ideal of D&D.

Sure. AD&Ders coming together to share knowledge and experience was an event with a natural lifetime of a few years, you had to be there to get the benefit (2006/7–2009/10). This is because as you say forums and blogs are impossible to navigate historically with slices through time preserving context.

No. In fact the assumption was those characters would be retired when they reached name level. I think the D&D breaks down around 11th level and I find it is best run as a political intrigue with no reference to the rules.
The difference for me between BECMI and AD&D is in the language used. The one for young teenagers, not a bad thing to have as an introduction, and the other addressing adults.

The Dorner thing was a standout. I think Freddy thought he was black (actually a flabby white guy), so of course hated cops and loved cop killers. I hadn’t heard of The Last Valley 1971 (Michael Caine) before watching the interview above. It is a great AD&D movie with no trace of the heroism of say The Magnificent Seven. In fact the band of religious war defectors look almost exactly like the characters on the cover of the original AD&D PHB. This is a perfect AD&D 1st-3rd level scenario. I can imagine throwing a single monster into the mix to fuck things up a bit.
Im kinda stunned I hadn’t seen The Last Valley before. Im really impressed by the look and the dialogue, not too fussy or pretentious given the context. Am looking forward to a bluray release because the valley itself is beautiful.

After reading the rules I went back and read the sections on Cultures in the Veins and monsters. The tone on Cultures and monsters was highly variable. Some of the Monsters I like a lot and would want to use whole cultures of them. Others, were described too poetically for me to use.
I am not a fan of Scrap Princess. But her art on Deep Carbon Observatory is starting to grow on me . . . it sets a certain mood.
After I had had time to digest the book, I realized that there is a lot missing in the content. Several peoples are covered in the Cultures section. But there are no descriptions about what individual members of that race are like. Using this book will take a lot of extra work on my part. There is a table of 100 random encounters. But, to use the table, I will have to flesh out most of them. There is no equipment list telling how much do things cost.
And now, for the conclusion:
In closing . . . I highly recommend this book as a reference. But not as book at the table.

By the last 3 books, do you mean the middle trilogy that began with The Wounded Land? Because there is a final series of 4 (or maybe 5) books. I tried to read it but tapped out two chapters into the first book of the last series. His prose became unreadable.
Ta, thought the series was pretty much shit from stem to sternum but I also read it in high school and preferred Joel Rosenberg’s Guardians of the Flame series. Which was also shit but far more entertaining. Stick that in your Appendicitis N.
The first trilogy was turned into frog-speak in the 80’s but it bombed. Didn’t finish it, thought it was vain and pointless and pompous, but maybe the translation was rubbish ; there was a new one in 2007, when a small house also published the second trilogy. The last four books are still unpublished here, and no one seems to be clamoring for them. As for Joel Rosenberg, total unknown, probably because that the tide of mediocre college fantasy from across the pond didn’t break the levee until 95 or so.
The middle Covenant books are OK, especially the one where the obnoxious protagonist is unconscious for the whole thing and that doctor chick who’s fascinated with him for some reason has taken over as protagonist. I read the first book of the final non-trilogy and enough was enough. “GOD I LOVE THAT THOMAS COVENANT” stretched to over a thousand pages.

I tried to run it with a coupled of friends, but the level indication of 1-3 is what killed it for me. Wizards only learn Breathe Cum at 5th level (or 3rd in the Lotfp/Vornheim editions). This made it kind hard to get past the Entry of the Two Towers section in chapter III. I appreciated the attempt at new treasure though. The Beads of Lubrication and the Plug of Iron Constitution were a nice variation on the habitual DnD paraphernalia and a wonderful shout out to the classic Ass-Eaters of Pyong-yang.
You are really going to love the next chapter: Huge Ruined Piles. Your players will shit themselves silly when they run up against the hemorrhoid hulks which lair in the fissures of doom.
