Flop sweat in Finland

June 12, 2012

Right now there is no more pleasing spectacle than the trainwreck that is LotFP. It’s like OSRmageddon up there, and the villagers are gathering in the town square and muttering curses, just one brave step away from taking up torches & pitchforks to storm the castle.

1. Congratulations people who bought into Jimmy’s Gardening Society hoping for discounts on cool stuff down the road. Since you shelled out, LotFP has offered precious few ways to recoup your goodwill investment, basically 2 or 3 different versions of the same core rules you already had and a bunch of 3rd party game store crap that because of shipping is invariably cheaper to buy at home. Other than Carcosa (which you likely also already had), you got nada… how’s that taste?

2. Indiegogo #1 shit the bed faster than Satine in a fetish video. 57 people paid $110-300 expecting to get up to 14 brand new LotFP adventures with their order, from exciting names like Frank Mentzer, Graeme Davis, Zak Cumtummy, and Stefan Dickpicture. What did they get? 1 adventure from a guy who is already late writing a different LotFP adventure, and they had to sweat that one out.

When I was 5 my uncle bet me he could make a match burn twice. Of course I was like “Fuck you, no way” and he proceeded to light a match, blow it out, and then press the hot ember into my arm and burn the fuck out of me. “See, burned twice!” he said proudly as I cried hot salty tears of shame and fear. James Edward Raggi IV is determined to prove he can burn his fanboys 3 times with the debut of Indiegogo #2.

This one is such a clusterfuck on the face of it that even his most dedicated fans have a host of troubling questions. I’ve never seen that crew question the flavor of the kool-aid, which seems an obvious prelude to them throwing down their cups and getting the fuck out of that jungle. Once again Jimmy is dangling the carrot of getting a big fat box full of stuff for your $100-500 investment and once again gullible turds are getting setup to be left holding an empty bag. Let’s do the math. Each adventure requires $6000… that means 2 adventures need $12,000, 3 adventures need $18,000, 4 adventures need $24,000, etc. Indiegogo #1 netted $16,240… which means a similar performance for #2 gets you 2 adventures.  In that case, I bet you’re hoping that the money is so spread out over the 18 different projects that none of them fund and you get your dough back.

Here’s my over/under on Indiegogo #2, place your bets. I’m calling 2 — count ’em 2 — adventures get funded, probably from among the J-Mal, Cook, Crawford, and Curtis projects. (Incidentally, how do you get talent to agree to work with you when you pit them against one another in a cage match like that? How do you make that happen when they can just look over at your last 14-artist Royal Rumble and see the sad results? Gotta hand it to Jimmy for having the gift of gab to pull that one off.) Is $100-500 worth it for 2 adventures, you tell me? Let’s say the project wildly over-performs — is $100-500 worth it for 5 adventures? Does anyone besides this guy buy 5 adventures in a year, or have a need for them?

Time to get the popcorn, can’t wait to cozy up next to this warm bonfire.

While I acknowledge the nobility in your restraint I consider name-calling a kindness and my duty. Where others refuse to notice the chocolate sauce smeared on the gourmand’s nose and upper lip my innate kindness troubles me to throw a roll of toilet paper at the ungainly diner’s head.

For example, notice how you refuse to notice (as you call him) J-Mal’s unhealthy choir-boy religiosity whereas I call him an insane religious fuck for his war on children who have not been brainwashed by insane religious adults as his own children have.

I will have to check my eyes, because I did not see “Insect Shrine” by Ragg4/”Art” by Poagy on that rather comprehensive list of future vaporware.

Despite that (no doubt inadvertant) oversight, this is still going to be the greatest OSR clusterfuck. The shitty funding options and the inability to choose the modules you want in the Grab Bag are going to come together quite nicely…

    • June 12, 2012 1:43 pm

I forgot about Insect Shrine — he took pre-order money for that, correct? I don’t count Poag’s silly flip book because Jimmy smartly didn’t take any cash for it.

Raggi has such a silver tongue he could talk the VD out of a “Hit it with my Axe” girl…..oh wait….even Kent could do that.
This is just the beginning of Raggi’s Kickstarter/Indiego-shit armageddon. Two abject failures in a row will stop the dollar bill express to Raggi’s turd smelling wallet. And wait until nothing comes out anyway! We’ll have a front row seat to his psychotic breakdown and subsequent Finnish rampage. He’ll make Breivick’s party look like a care package.
That or end it all listening to some Euro metal band while on the toilet in a seedy club.

Naw, who am I kidding. He’ll pick himself up, dust himself off, and call up Pog to get some shitty cover artwork for his next masterpiece. Baby eating shitting orcs or bust!

BTW, we need more of the fake DM Vince. Those crack me up.

      Ugh! I am not “fake”. • June 13, 2012 3:42 pm

Try where we talk about Pathfinder like it’s 1988. You really need to give us OSR forum operators a break. It is hard for people to come up with something new from games that existed during the hay day of B.J. and the Bear. I guess we could take D&D and make it have sex with Teenage Mutant Turtles for a grand sewer crawl.

Don’t get me wrong, the Knights and Knaves “get” it, but after the first three responses to the original post the rest of them just kept beating the same dead horse. I agree that nothing much worth reading/playing has been written since 1981, but a corollary of that is that the K&KA guys must undoubtedly have covered everything that needs to be discussed about ’70s/’80s D&D several thousand threads ago. If some twenty five year old wants to discover their gaming roots, they can do it on their own as far as I’m concerned. Fuck ’em if they can’t figure it out for themselves.

I’m not one of these jagoffs who tries to indoctrinate his kids into D&D…. but… I did dump copies of the old Moldvay Basic and Expert rulebooks in front of my two boys (under 10) about a year ago, and said “have at it if you like”. I don’t play with them, ever (I have no interest), and have only answered about thirty questions about the rules for them since. Every few days, they’ll draw up a dungeon on the nylon battlemat and take turns DMing each other, and I sit in the other room, listen, and smile.

Some of their “house rules” are gloriously ill conceived, and they have some strange misconceptions about how some things work, but I’ll tell you what, I hear more creativity, role playing, and fun coming out of those sessions than in any ten I’ve played myself with adults. They don’t need so-called “old school gaming” explained to them–it comes naturally. These newbie 4E/World of Darkness/drama club fatbeards, on the other hand, need the last two decades of bad Hollywood movies, anime, story games, and CCGs beaten out of them to understand what is perfectly obvious to a 9 year old.

To answer your question, I recently (about a year ago) moved away from a group I’d been playing AD&D with for about 20 years, and I wasn’t the DM in that game (I prefer to be a player). My interest had been declining for years, and now with no opportunities I’ve just decided I don’t care. Plus, massive amounts of marijuana were a large part of the game, and I can’t see playing without it, to be frank.

The spell corruption is a gimmick that is in less than a twentieth of the “Appendix N” literature claimed as a source. The funnel is a concept not apparent in “Appendix N” either – it is a sop to all the “characters should die because it’s old school” OSR drones. The artwork has Poag.

‘kay. I’ve been away from the OSR for about a year now. When I left, people were still selling stuff for material they’d already finished. Most of it is not worth the paper and ink needed to print it, but they are still completed products.

But now we’ve got ways to get people to cough up money for “on spec” investments in materials based on the mere hope that said projects may, possibly, eventually get finished? And people are going for it? Even though all their investments really get them are the opportunities to buy the products (if they get printed) at nominal discounts? Do I understand this correctly?

Lesson: do not ever underestimate the power of gaming addiction, especially when fueled by nostalgia.

In related news, I’m going to start a Kickstarter blog project. If I get enough funding (I want $50,000.00 before I’ll even get out of bed), I’ll start a new blog and I promise I’ll only post quality links to materials found other, now abandoned blogs. If you become one of the larger investors in my new blog, I’ll link you on my sidebar or whatever.

Indeed. And the jackasses who are discussing it aren’t even discussing the merits of Thorkhammer’s work. The writing is abysmal, the artwork is kindergartnerish (and I say that with the greatest respect, my own kindergartner in mind), and editing/proofreading is nonexistent.

The thing is, these guys aren’t discussing the comparative quality of the work, they’re talking about the collectible value of the end product. While this is not a huge surprise given the venue, it does raise the question of why we aren’t more down on the ridiculous collecting mentality over the the Ass-Yum (look, the homoerotic imagery seems to proliferate here, so I’m just goin’ with it, LOL).

Hell, I’m a regular on the Acaeum. Look, I’ve owned many of the “rare” (read as “soon to be valueless once people forget who the fuck Gary Gygax was) items that these guys have and cherish so very much, but the OSR has fucking killed any joy I once derived from this stuff. It’s like a crucible, where all that is dross and superfluous has been burned away–Judges Guild, The Companions, Lamentations of the Flamer, and all the rest included. If I gave a flying fuck about D&D anymore, it would be the three AD&D books and a couple modules and consign the rest to the dustbin. Kickstarter is just the icing on the cake.

This shit is done (the OSR). Gygax was a semi-likable, but basically dickish dude who ran some games out of his basement and like a stroke of lightning happened to publish some stuff that caught one. Great, love it, but that’s as far as it goes. The man had zero taste in fantastic literature (give me Lin Carter [the editor], Stuart Schiff, or even Darrell Schweitzer any day of the fucking week). I mean, the man couldn’t even admit/see that Tolkien was a fuckin’ genius. And CAS didn’t even make the “N list”. What a wannabe jackass.

It has occurred to me, reading this thread, that I don’t think there’s ever been a time since 1977 when I haven’t owned something D&D-related, even if it’s just been in storage somewhere. It also occurs to me that I won’t be able to say I’ve finally left the game until I make a grand gesture. I’m-a thinkin’ I may just have to haul everything that’s left – the Holmes book and basic modules, the Traveler Black Book set, the 3.5 books, the dice, and every last sheet of graph paper – over to the dumpster, then brush my hands off and walk away whistling.

      In fact . . . hang on . . .

. . . aaand done. Couldn’t whistle, though, since it’s midnight and the neighbors get pissy.

Damn. Now I’m thinking about how much of my library consists of fantasy and history books I own solely because of their potential relationship to the game. Now I’m-a thinkin’ old, existential Michael Moorcock and his pulpy ilk can follow the RPG material when I get up in the morning.

Gentlemen, it’s been fun. Thanks for acting as a gaming epicac, of sorts. I reckon I’m done, too.

@Cameron – Hell, at least sell the stuff on eBay and make a few bucks.

As regards the related pulp lit, I have to agree (for the most part). I’ve been painfully rearranging my literary preferences over the last few years, in light of what the OSR has done to my appreciation for “guilty pleasure” fantasy (i.e., annihilated it). It’s been largely a process of separating out my own taste from that of Gary Gygax’s. Encouragingly, I’ve discovered that there’s a part of me that has always gone beyond Appendix N, so there’s hope yet. Keep in mind that I’ve NEVER been stupid enough to read any of that insipid wannabe Tolkien/REH trash penned by Erikson, Cook, Jordan, and their ilk, and threw out my Donaldson, Brooks, etc. literally decades ago.

I haven’t gotten rid of all of the works/authors that didn’t make the cut, but have sold off or thrown out a good many paperbacks and hardbacks, and relegated the rest to “bottom shelf” status or a box in the closert…

“Appendix N”-type authors that don’t make the grade (IMO, of course):

        1) Moorcock (though I still have a soft spot for the End of Time stuff) – MM is a puerile political nitwit in love with his own legend; as Tom Disch called him once, he’s the P. T. Barnum of SF.
        2) Robert E. Howard – A more misguided, infantile excuse for a grown man never put fingers to typewriter keys. Fuck the “Shield Wall”. If you want to read the same childish power fantasy in six dozen near-identical renditions, he’s your guy.
        3) C. S. Lewis – Not on EGG’s list, but is on Moldvay’s. If I want to be proselytized for 850 pages, I’ll read Gene Wolfe, because at least he’s clever about it.
        4) Roger Zelazny – About half as brilliant as he thought he was. I’ll always have some fondness for the Amber series, but it’s basically Raymond Chandler meets King Arthur.

The list could go on for a while..

“Appendix N” authors that still hold up (again, IMO):

        1) Fritz Leiber – A vastly underrated talent that never got his due.
        2) Lovecraft – Whatever his limitations personally, a seminal influence.
        3) Tolkien – I have come to believe that EGG was sincere in his dislike for JRRT, which in my book makes him a fucking philistine.
        4) Vance – EGG desperately wanted to write like Vance, and only succeeded in becoming a self-parody by trying to ape JV’s arch and breezy style.

And of course there’s CAS, PKD, Cordwainer Smith, Stapledon, Wells, Tiptree, and a whole host of others that damn well should have been on that list but weren’t.

What am I reading now, though? McCarthy and Saki, LOL.

I appreciate the thoughts, guys, but sometimes to make something feel final, truly stupid, er, I mean grand gestures are required. Look at this way: By my actions I’ve probably increased the dollar value of the same books and modules by a few fractions of a cent.

Don’t think there wasn’t a time this morning where I didn’t think about getting the box out of the dumpster. But, in having made the gesture in the first place, going back on it would un-man me as surely as Alexis unmans himself every time he puts on a pair of panties. Sorry – that was a gratuitous, cheap shot, but since this is my last D&D-related blog appearance ever, I figure it’s as good a time as any to make it. Cheers!

“4) Vance – EGG desperately wanted to write like Vance, and only succeeded in becoming a self-parody by trying to ape JV’s arch and breezy style.”

You know, I’ve read some Vance (Gray Prince, the Planet of Adventure books) and found that his writing style came across as entertaining and effortless, which is sadly more than I can say for Gary. I’ve never really liked his style. It always sounded pompous and condescending and reeked of thesaurus abuse. There. I said it.

And I agree with many on this thread. The OSR as it has (d)evolved has really taken much of my enjoyment out of the hobby. It’s unfortunate, because three years ago, I enjoyed the DIY spirit of the OSR. Unfortunately, people started to think of their carbon copies of D&D as “their” creations and “brands” that they’re trying with increasing desperation to profit from.

Radovarl, some conductors – very very very few – are as important to those who enjoy classical music as the great composers.

Gygax as an interpreter of fantasy writers, as sort of recreative artist, is as important to me as Leiber, Vance, Howard, ca Smith and I think you overlook the function of appendix N which indicates those authors which did and can influence the implementation of a D&D game. Tolkien, Eddison and Hodgson are superior to the writers I named above and are not suited to exploration or reimagination at the gametable – of course I except myself from this general rule which applies to you ordinary lads (good triers) and the osr nob-heads.

@Scott – Yeah, the Tartarus Press Saki looks decent, but I opted for the Folio Society edition (Best of, not Short Stories). I’ve read most of him on the web already, though, so it’s mostly shelf candy for me at this point (my bookshelf makes Kent’s blogposted books look like a greasy pork loin slapped on a cutting board, for what it’s worth….i.e., not much, though I do covet that sweet Arkham House Hodgson he’s sporting).

@Kent – Sorry, missed your reply the first time I looked. I mentioned Tolkien, and I’m a fan of Hodgson as well, and neglected to mention him because of the almost unparseable faux 16th-century dialect he affects in the Night Land (though I’ve read it), not to mention its ridiculously virginal and naive treatment of male/female relations (an otherwise monumental work of the imagination). Whatever else the man was, he was a cabin boy got buggered one too many times, and decided to compensate by becoming a body-builder. To be pitied, but not emulated.

Eddison is problematic for me. His command of language and style is unsurpassed, granted, but his actual storytelling capability is almost undetectable (I’ve only read The Worm Orouboros, I’ll admit). Poetic, I suppose, but after about 200 pages I realized I was reading a rather violently repressed homoerotic fantasy about a football team touring Mercury. And that’s not healthy for anyone.

I freely admit that Appendix N (at age 10), as well as Deities and Demigods, pointed me toward a lot of worthwhile reading material. Gygax himself, as a “recreative artist”, and certainly as an arbiter of good taste, is fucking worthless. I (the student) surpassed him (the master) about five years on. You neglect to mention the many authors on the list that are complete shit–Lin Carter (good editor, terrible writer), Gardner Fox (crap), etc.

You wanna talk well-read in the field, Kent, you’ve met your match and then some. I estimate I’ve got a good 12 years on you, and several thousand pages (And no, I haven’t read Joyce, and wouldn’t waste my time).

I think you’re kind of missing the point, here, kent. I couldn’t care less if you feel my opinions are credible, and don’t give a flying fuck about your opinions either. There are others who opinions I respect that don’t find Eddison creepy, but you’re not one of them. As far as Hodgson, even those who like his work in general despise his misogyny, as I do. I’d like to hear your defense of “The Night Land”, it’d be worth a couple of laughs no doubt.

The thing I hate most about this (and the Kickstarter crap as well) is that it makes me ashamed to be a gamer and gnaws away at my enjoyment of the hobby like a single rat in an empty, dust-filled room in Dwimmermount. It reminds me of why I left the hobby for fifteen years. Such rampant egotism on the one hand (author) and stupidity on the other (bidders). The module isn’t worth a free frickin’ download as it is. No art? Four pages? A crappy cover with a clip art skull? And someone’s bidding $75 for it?

No wonder all this Kickstarter bullshit is raking in the cash. Cynical ploys for money by a few hucksters that is eaten up by overly nostalgic 30- and 40-something gamers whose lives have become so pathetic and meaningless that they long for the halcyon days of sitting in their parents’ basements guzzling Dew and playing D&D.

I don’t blame Monte for staying. He’s really hit the skids, what with his wife dumping him and getting his name booted from yet another edition of D&D. (3.5, 4 and now 5. Nobody cares anymore about a guy who designed a D&D that lasted only three years before it was replacedbut I digress.)

How fascinating, thanks for the laffs… it seems the only thing YDISsers hate more than JMal, Raggi, etc., are each other. Listen to Radovarl and Kent go at it.

It’s been really funny reading about these guys at YDIS threatening to quit gaming… or how other people’s kickstarters have them so depressed that they just can’t bring themselves to roll a 20 sider no more… or mopes throwing their books into the trash in order to prove a point. That’ll show em! Then we have “Kent” accusing others of cowardice because they post under fake names. Plus the “My bookshelf is bigger than your dick” contest was impressive. And more accusations of homosexual behavior than have been heard in a year of Sundays at Westboro Baptist Church.

My favorite is the bit in which one of you fuckers rambles on about how great his kids are (sniff) ‘cuz they didn’t need D&D explained to ‘em; he has managed to capture the cadence and pregnant pauses of a drunken Garrison Keillor, then, before someone can say “Sandusky” it’s back to the talk of fisting and shit…. Plus “Tim” taking a moral highroad while wading down this online river of sewage — fight the good fight, Timothy!

And where would a thread on D&D be if it did not eventually bring up someone threatening to turn someone else into the law for copyright violation? I’m sure Gail will appreciate your collective gaming industry expertise when it comes to calculating the damages! Don’t forget to add some in for your own pain and suffering — because you boys have suffered a lot. Those OSR fuckers ruined gaming for you — they owe you big time.

You’ve managed to hit all the goals, gentlemen, nay, you have fuh-fuh-fuh-fucking surpassed them… like a kickstarter where some lackluster OSR blogger with just a dream and a Thesaurus asked for 5k and got 25k before he even wrote a single word. Bravo!
