Got my weekly e-newsletter from DriveThruRPG yesterday and trashed it immediately because I’m too lazy to unsubscribe and it’s full of garbage. But then 3 hours later DriveThru sends another email, this one with a tearful apology for “racially insensitive” content. What did I miss? Not sure why DriveThru is apologizing. This is exciting news for fans of the underappreciated RaHoWa (Racial Holy War) rpg — I think Hex Games is the first publisher to offer 3rd party support, a very bold move on their part. Probably just a problem with timing — maybe the Magical Negro prestige class was not supposed to be revealed until they had the Inscrutable Oriental and Hard-Bargaining Hymie locked down. Or maybe they were still working out details to get Morgan Freeman to pose for the miniature sculpt. Whatever, I’m just pleased to see Hex Games step forward to create supplements for a game that they are obviously quite passionate about.

Johnson’s ‘apology’ is patently disingenuous. He says he included the “Magical Negro” archetype “to subtly warn players.” Read the “Magical Negro” paragraph again — there is no warning, subtle or otherwise. Johnson did include an obvious warning in the following paragraph, which belies his ‘subtle warning’ excuse. Why would he include a subtle warning immediately prior to an obvious “Word of Warning”? It doesn’t make any sense.
It is not difficult to discuss the ‘Noble Savage’ concept without invoking the inflammatory spectre of the “Magical Negro,” yet he chose to do so. Johnson may not be a racist; it’s possible that he’s just an insensitive lout or a profound imbecile (or perhaps both). You want to have an enlightened discussion about racial stereotypes? Fine, but the DriveThruRPG newsletter is a less than ideal venue.
